How to Customize BSL Shaders for a Cinematic Look
BSL's strength is its configurability. You can push it toward a dreamy, film-like aesthetic without touching code — everything lives in the shader options menu.
Building the Cinematic Feel
Open Shader Options and enable or tune:
- Depth of Field: blurs distant scenery. Lower the focus distance so nearby subjects stay sharp.
- Motion Blur: adds trailing when you move the
camera. Keep it subtle or it becomes nauseating. - Bloom: raises the glow around bright sources like torches and the sun.
- Volumetric Light: makes god rays visible through trees and windows.
- Color Grading / Saturation: nudge saturation and contrast up for a punchier image.
Camera Shake / Waving: disable waving for stable footage.
Framing and Capture Tips
- Use F1 to hide the HUD and F5 to switch to
third-person for establishing shots. - Lower your FOV slightly for a more filmic perspective.
- Pause the game (single-player) to freeze motion while you compose a shot.
- Take screenshots with F2; they save to your screenshots folder.
Balancing Beauty and Playability
Cinematic settings hurt performance and can make normal play uncomfortable. Save your tweaked preset as a separate shader profile so you can switch back to a gameplay-friendly configuration quickly.
