Get Better Shadows Without Losing Frames

Open Shadow Configuration

Press O to access shader settings, then find the Shadows section.

Understand Shadow Trade-offs

Soft shadows create depth and atmosphere but cost performance. The mod balances this by:

  • Limiting shadow distance (shadows only appear near the player)
  • Using lower-resolution shadow maps on lower presets
  • Softening shadow edges to hide pixelation

Customize Shadow Quality

Adjust these sliders:

  • Shadow Distance: Reduce this if shadows cause lag; they'll only appear close to you
  • Shadow Softness: Lower values = sharper, faster shadows; higher = softer, more realistic
  • Shadow Intensity: Dim or brighten shadows without disabling them

Monitor Performance

Watch your FPS while adjusting. Shadows are most noticeable during sunrise, sunset, and under trees. If you hit a frame rate wall, reduce shadow distance first—it has the biggest impact on performance.

The potato preset already has shadows optimized for weak hardware, so start there if unsure.
