Bobby Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get Bobby to start saving chunks?
Just play normally on a server with Bobby installed — it records chunks the server sends you into .minecraft/.bobby automatically. There's no button to press; the more you explore, the more distant terrain gets cached for later.
Where does Bobby store the chunks it saves?
In the .minecraft/.bobby folder, organized per server or world. You can back up or delete that folder to reset what Bobby remembers.
Why do distant chunks disappear when I rejoin a server?
Bobby only renders chunks it has already recorded, so areas you never visited won't appear. If chunks you did visit vanish, check that the .bobby folder wasn't cleared and that the server address matches the one you originally played on.
How do I make Bobby render farther than the server's view distance?
Set your client render distance higher than the server's view distance in video settings, and Bobby will fill the extra range with locally cached chunks. The server still only sends its own limit, so anything beyond that comes from Bobby's saved data.
Can Bobby load chunks from my single-player world onto a server?
Yes — point Bobby at an existing single-player save and it can use those chunks for terrain the server hasn't sent. This works best when the server world and your single-player world share the same seed and terrain generation.
How do I configure Bobby in-game?
Install Mod Menu and Cloth Config alongside Bobby, then open Mod Menu from the main menu or pause screen and select Bobby. Its config screen lets you adjust render distance, caching behavior, and related options without editing files.
Bobby isn't showing distant chunks — what should I check?
Confirm your client render distance is actually higher than the server's view distance, since Bobby only fills the gap beyond the server limit. Also verify the .bobby folder has data for that server and that no other mod is overriding chunk rendering.
Does Bobby work on multiplayer servers, or only single-player?
Bobby is built mainly for multiplayer — it caches chunks the server sends so you can see them again later. It can also pull chunks from a local single-player world, but its core purpose is extending view distance on servers.
Does Bobby cause lag or use a lot of RAM?
Rendering more chunks than the server sends does cost memory and GPU load, so very high render distances can hurt performance. Lower your client render distance or Bobby's settings if you notice stuttering, especially on lower-end machines.
Is Bobby compatible with shaders and other rendering mods?
Bobby generally works alongside shader packs and performance mods, but heavy shaders combined with a large Bobby render distance can strain your GPU. If you see visual glitches or crashes, test with shaders disabled to isolate the cause.
