How to build an automatic glass smelter with a blast furnace and hoppers

Because a blast furnace now smelts sand, you can build a hands-off glass setup using vanilla hopper behavior.

What you need

  • 1 blast furnace
  • 3 hoppers
  • 3 chests (or 2 chests plus a source of sand)
  • Sand and fuel

Build

1. Place the blast furnace.

2. Put a hopper on top of it, pointing down into the furnace. Place a chest of sand above that hopper. Items from the hopper go into the input slot.

3. Put a hopper on the side of the furnace, pointing into it. Place a chest of fuel above or behind that hopper. Items fed from the side go into the fuel slot.

4. Put a hopper underneath the furnace, pointing down into a chest. It pulls finished glass out of the output slot.

Using it

  • Fill the sand chest and fuel chest, then collect glass from the bottom chest.
  • Check the fuel chest now and then, because the furnace stops when fuel runs out.
  • To scale up, build more of these units side by side, each with its own hoppers and chests.
