Beyond Horses Resource Pack FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn a horse into a different animal?
Use an anvil to rename a nametag with the creature's name in brackets followed by your desired pet name, like "[Wolf] Fang", then use the nametag on any horse. The horse will instantly change appearance to match that creature while keeping all its original stats and riding behavior.
What mods do I need for Beyond Horses to work?
You need Entity Texture Features and Entity Model Features mods installed alongside Beyond Horses for the custom models and textures to display correctly. Without these, the resource pack won't function as intended.
Can I ride boss mobs like the Ender Dragon or Wither?
Yes, you can use nametags to transform a horse into boss creatures like the Ender Dragon, Wither, Warden, or Elder Guardian. The horse retains its normal rideable stats, so you can safely ride these powerful mobs without taking damage from their abilities.
Do flying creatures like bats or phantoms actually fly when I ride them?
No, flying creatures still move on the ground with standard walking animations—they won't actually take flight. The pack only changes their appearance, not their movement mechanics, so you'll walk or gallop normally even on a bat or phantom.
Will my custom mount keep its appearance if I reload the world?
Yes, the nametag permanently applies the transformation to that specific horse, so the appearance persists across world reloads and server sessions as long as the horse remains alive.
Can I use the same nametag format for other animals besides horses?
The pack is designed specifically for horses—only horses can be transformed into other creatures using the nametag naming system. Other animals won't respond to the bracket naming convention.
What happens if I use an invalid creature name in the brackets?
If you use a creature name that isn't included in the pack, the horse will either keep its default appearance or display an error state. Stick to the supported creature list to ensure proper transformation.
Does the saddle and armor fit properly on all creature types?
Yes, the pack includes adjusted saddle and rein positions for each creature type so they sit correctly on different body shapes, from tiny axolotls to massive ender dragons.
Can I ride hostile mobs like creepers or spiders without them attacking me?
When a horse is transformed into a hostile mob via nametag, it becomes a rideable mount and won't attack you—the transformation overrides its hostile behavior as long as you're riding it.
Will this pack affect my game performance?
The pack relies on client-side rendering through Entity Texture Features and Entity Model Features, so performance impact depends on your system and how many custom mounts you have loaded at once. Most players experience minimal lag with standard render distances.
