Enhance Building Details with Normal Maps
What Normal Maps Do
Normal maps in BetterRTX Remastered create the illusion of surface bumps and texture without adding extra geometry. When light hits a wooden plank or stone brick, the normal map makes it look carved and detailed rather than flat. This works at any distance and doesn't impact performance.
Build with Texture Variety in Mind
Use blocks with naturally different surfaces—wood, stone, concrete, terracotta—in the same build. Each block type has unique normal map data, so mixing materials will show off the depth effect better than using a single block type. Layered designs with trim and detail blocks will look especially three-dimensional.
Adjust Lighting Angles for Best Depth
Normal map effects are most visible when light comes from the side or at an angle to surfaces. Build during different times of day to see how sunlight direction changes the appearance of texture detail. Interior lighting positioned at angles will also emphasize the bumpy, carved look that normal maps provide.
