How to Make a Nether Map Show Only the Terrain Below a Certain Height

Why height filtering matters in the Nether

In the Nether, a normal map fills in with the topmost blocks it finds, so you end up staring at a solid ceiling of netherrack instead of the caves, tunnels, and ledges you actually walk through. Better Nether Map Mod fixes this by only drawing blocks that sit below a chosen height, so the map reflects the walkable layers.

Setting the display height

1. Create or open a map while you are in the Nether (or another cave dimension).

2. Open the mod's config screen. Depending on your setup this is usually reachable from the mod list's config button, or from an in-game config menu if you have one installed.

3. Find the height option for map rendering. You get two behaviors:

  • Map creation level — the map locks onto the Y level where you were standing when you first created it, and only shows blocks at or below that level.
  • Custom value — you type a specific Y level yourself, so every map you make uses that cutoff.

4. Pick the mode you want, and if you chose custom, enter the Y level of the floor you usually travel on.

5. Save the config and re-open or recreate the map so it regenerates with the new cutoff.

Getting the height right

Stand on the main path you use and check your Y coordinate, then set the cutoff a little above your feet. Too low and you lose the floor you're walking on; too high and ceilings creep back onto the map.
