Better Nether Map Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I get started with Better Nether Map Mod?
Craft a map the normal way and use it in the Nether or any cave dimension. The mod automatically filters what the map displays based on the height setting, so you don't need a special item to begin.
How does the height filter actually work?
The map only renders blocks that sit below the configured height, ignoring everything above it. This stops the Nether's ceiling from covering your map and lets you see the actual terrain you're walking on.
How do I change the height that the map uses?
Open the mod's config and switch between using the map's creation level or entering a custom height value. Once set, any map you use will filter terrain to that level.
What's the difference between map creation level and a custom height?
Map creation level uses whatever Y level you were standing at when the map was made, so each map filters to its own origin height. A custom height applies one fixed value to every map, which is better if you always explore at a consistent level.
My Nether map is completely blank — what went wrong?
Your height setting is probably below the terrain you're standing on, so nothing qualifies to be drawn. Raise the height value in the config until the floor and nearby blocks start appearing.
My map only shows the Nether ceiling and nothing else.
The height is set too high, so the map is rendering the roof instead of the ground. Lower the height setting to somewhere around the level you actually walk at.
Does this mod work in the Overworld too?
It's designed for the Nether and cave-like dimensions where vertical stacking hides terrain, but the height filter will apply anywhere a map is used. In the Overworld it mostly just hides surface features above your chosen height.
Can I use this mod on a server with friends?
Yes, but everyone who wants the filtered map view needs the mod installed on their client. Players without it will see normal unfiltered maps.
Will this mod conflict with other map or minimap mods?
It only changes how vanilla maps render terrain, so it generally coexists with minimap mods. If another mod also overrides map rendering, expect one of them to take priority.
Does the height filter hurt performance?
Filtering actually reduces what the map has to draw, so performance is usually the same or slightly better than an unfiltered map. Very large explored areas can still cause lag regardless of the height setting.
