How to Monitor Your Mount During Long Journeys Without Opening Menus

The main benefit of this mod is continuous awareness of your mount's condition while travelling. Here is how to build that awareness into your routine so you never lose a mount to neglect mid-trip.

Set a checking rhythm

Every so often while riding — after crossing a biome, climbing a hill, or taking fall damage — glance at the mount health and hunger indicators. Because they are always on screen while mounted, no key press is needed. Treat a drop in health hearts as a signal to slow down and scan for danger, and a drop in the hunger indicator as a signal to plan a stop.

Handle problems before they compound

Carry the correct feed for your mount in your hotbar so you can dismount and feed it immediately when the hunger indicator runs low. If health is falling steadily with no obvious cause, dismount and inspect the area for hazards such as berry bushes, magma, or mobs. Keeping the mount fed also helps it maintain speed, so regular feeding during long rides keeps your travel time consistent. The goal is to react to the HUD the moment it changes rather than discovering a problem only when the mount refuses to move.
