Optimize Shadow Quality Without Losing Frames

Understand Shadow Distance Trade-offs

Soft shadows in AVALux Reimagined are computationally expensive. The shader calculates shadow detail based on how far from the player shadows remain visible. Longer shadow distances look better but cost more performance.

Adjust Shadow Distance Incrementally

Open shader settings and locate Shadow Distance or Shadow Render Distance. Start by reducing it slightly from maximum:

  • If you're getting 60+ FPS, try increasing shadow distance by small steps
  • If you're below 60 FPS, decrease shadow distance until performance stabilizes
  • Test in areas with many blocks (forests, cities) where shadows are most visible

Balance Detail with Performance

Look for the sweet spot where shadows remain crisp and detailed in your immediate surroundings while fading naturally at distance. You won't notice shadow pop-in if the transition happens beyond your typical viewing range.

Use Performance Profile as a Starting Point

Your chosen performance profile (Low, Medium, High) already includes a recommended shadow distance. Only adjust if you need to squeeze out more FPS or want enhanced visuals beyond your profile's defaults.
