Automatic-potato Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I know if the mod is working?
Launch your game and check your console log during startup—you should see update status messages printed there for each mod being checked. If you see no messages at all, verify the mod is in your mods folder and check the troubleshooting guide.
Why aren't all my mods showing update alerts?
The mod can only check mods that have homepage links and promo version fields properly configured. Mods without these fields won't generate alerts even if updates exist; check the guide on understanding which mods are being checked.
Can I turn off update checking for specific mods?
The mod checks all compatible mods by default with no per-mod toggle. If you want to reduce noise, you can check the console output selectively or refer to the troubleshooting guide for configuration options.
Does this mod slow down my game startup?
Update checking happens during startup but is designed to be lightweight and shouldn't noticeably impact load times. The check runs once per launch and only reads metadata, not full mod files.
What's the difference between the version numbers shown?
The console shows your current mod version and the latest available version side-by-side so you can quickly see if an update exists. Check the guide on reading console alerts for details on interpreting the output.
Will this mod work with mods from different sources?
Yes, it checks any Fabric mod that includes proper homepage and version metadata, regardless of where it came from. Compatibility depends on the mod's configuration, not its source.
Can I check for updates manually without restarting?
The mod only checks during game startup; there's no in-game command to trigger manual checks. You'll need to restart your game to run a new update check.
Why do some mods show 'no update available' even though I know there's a newer version?
The mod reads from the promo version field in each mod's metadata, so if that field isn't updated by the mod author, the checker won't detect the new release. This is a limitation of the mod's data source, not the checker itself.
Does this mod work with Forge mods or only Fabric?
This mod is for Fabric only and brings Forge-style update checking to the Fabric loader. It cannot check Forge mods or work in a Forge environment.
What should I do if the console shows an error instead of an update alert?
Check the troubleshooting guide for missing or incorrect update alerts, which covers common error scenarios. Most issues stem from mods lacking proper metadata or temporary connection problems during startup.
