Audio Engine Tweaks Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Why are some sounds not playing when lots of things happen at once?
Minecraft has a limited sound pool—only a certain number of sounds can play simultaneously. When you exceed this limit, the game drops sounds. Audio Engine Tweaks Mod prevents this by using a priority system: important sounds (like voice and player sounds) play first, while less critical ones (like ambient sounds) are skipped when the pool fills up.
How do I stop the same sound from repeating over and over from one spot?
The mod includes a duplication check that limits how many identical sounds can play from the same block coordinate in a single tick. By default, up to 5 instances of the same sound are allowed; adjust the `maxDuplicatedSounds` setting in your config file to reduce repetition further.
What's the difference between sound categories and why does it matter?
Sound categories (MASTER, VOICE, PLAYERS, HOSTILE, etc.) are ranked by priority—lower numbers mean higher priority. When the sound pool gets full, the mod allows high-priority sounds to play while dropping low-priority ones. This ensures you always hear important sounds like menu clicks or player voices instead of ambient noise.
Can I change which sounds play first?
Yes. Open ModMenu or edit the config file directly to reassign sound types to different priority categories (0–6) and adjust the fill-level thresholds for each category. For example, you could move HOSTILE sounds to a higher priority if you want to hear mob sounds before ambient ones.
Why do menu and GUI sounds always play even when everything else is silent?
MASTER and MUSIC category sounds bypass the normal queue and duplication check, so they play instantly. This ensures critical sounds—like menu clicks or music—never get dropped, even when the server is frozen or the sound pool is under stress.
What happens if the sound pool completely fills up?
With the mod's fill-level thresholds in place, the pool should never completely fill. However, if it does, all new sounds are skipped entirely until space opens up. The thresholds are designed to prevent this scenario by intelligently dropping lower-priority sounds before capacity is reached.
Does this mod affect performance or cause lag?
No. The mod optimizes Minecraft's existing audio engine rather than adding new sounds or features. It runs lightweight checks each tick to sort and filter sounds, which actually reduces strain on the sound system compared to vanilla Minecraft's behavior of dropping sounds randomly.
Can I make a sound type play instantly instead of waiting for the next tick?
Only MASTER and MUSIC sounds play instantly by design. Other categories that request instant playback are automatically deferred to the next tick to prevent audio conflicts and maintain the priority system's integrity.
What do the fill-level percentages mean (like 'up to 95%')?
These percentages control when each sound category is allowed to play based on how full the sound pool currently is. For example, PLAYERS sounds play up to 95% capacity, meaning they're allowed even when the pool is nearly full. AMBIENT sounds only play up to 50%, so they're dropped first when space runs low.
How do I know if the mod is working?
In intense situations (like large battles or many block interactions), you'll notice sounds no longer cut off randomly—important sounds like player damage or mob sounds play consistently while background noise fades. If menu clicks always play but ambient sounds sometimes don't, the priority system is working as intended.
