Fixing Common Cart Problems: Won't Move, Won't Attach, Lost Items

Carts misbehave for a handful of predictable reasons. Here is how to diagnose the usual complaints.

Cart Will Not Attach to an Animal

  • The animal may not be a valid draft type. Horses, donkeys, and mules work; cows, pigs, and sheep generally do not.
  • The animal may already be hitched to another cart. Detach it first.
  • You may be right-clicking the wrong part. Try the cart body, then the animal, then sneak-right-click.
  • The animal may be a baby.

Cart Will Not Move

  • Check the ground. Carts stall on steep slopes, in water, and on uneven terrain. Flatten a path or use roads.
  • The animal may be stuck on a fence or block. Break the obstruction.
  • If you are pulling a Hand Cart, make sure you are actually holding the handle — right-click it again.

Items Missing from the Cart

  • Contents drop if the cart is destroyed. Never break a loaded cart unless you are ready to collect.
  • Chunk unloading can scramble contents in some builds. Park carts inside loaded areas.
  • If you detached the animal while the GUI was open, re-open the cart to confirm.

Last Resort

Break the cart, pick up the item, and re-place it. This resets most stuck states.
