Building a Cart Road and Hauling Route in TFC
Carts shine when you give them a proper road. TFC terrain is rough, and a cart that stalls on every hill wastes more time than it saves.
Planning the Route
Pick two endpoints — typically your mine or farm and your main storage. Walk the path first on foot and note every steep slope, water crossing, and tight turn. Carts handle gentle grades and straight lines best.
Building the Road
- Use packed dirt, gravel, or stone slabs to smooth the surface. Slabs are excellent because they eliminate the half-block step that snags wheels.
- Bridge water with planks or stone rather than fording it — carts slow dramatically in water.
- Widen corners to at least three blocks so the cart can swing through without clipping.
- Add fences on cliff edges; a cart that falls is a cart you have to rebuild.
Running the Route
Hitch your animal at one end, load the cart, and drive. Keep a second cart parked at the far end so you can swap loads without unhitching. For long routes, place a small shelter with a chest at each terminus to stage goods.
Maintenance
TFC erosion and mobs can damage roads. Re-slab sunken sections periodically. A well-built road lasts many in-game years and turns cart hauling from a chore into a routine.
