How to Make an Armor Stand Hold Items and Weapons

Placing Items in the Hands

After you have given a stand arms, you can equip it like a mob. Hold the item you want it to carry and use it on the armor stand. The stand will take the item into the appropriate hand slot, and it will render as if the stand is gripping it. Swords, tools, shields, torches, and most other held items display correctly.

Getting Items Back

To remove an item, interact with the stand while your hand is empty, or break and replace the stand. If you are in creative mode, you can also use the standard armor stand interaction to swap gear. On servers, make sure you have permission to modify the stand, since some protection plugins block item removal.

Display Tips

  • Symmetry: Give both hands items for a balanced look, or leave one hand empty for a more natural pose.
  • Poses: Combine arms with armor stand pose commands or a pose editor to angle the arms so the held item points where you want.
  • Weapons and shields: A sword in one hand and a shield in the other makes a convincing guard or knight display.
  • Lighting: Held items cast shadows, so place a light source above the stand to make the item readable from a distance.

If an item refuses to go into the hand, check that the stand actually has arms first — stands without arms cannot hold anything.
