How to Set Up Areas on a Multiplayer Server

The Installation Requirement

Areas Mod is not server-side only. Every player who connects must have the mod installed on their own client, or they will not see any notifications and may experience issues. Before rolling it out, tell your players which mod loader and version family to use so everyone matches. There is no way around this — a vanilla client cannot receive the area messages.

Configuring Defaults

On the server, edit the config file to set a default radius. This is the radius used when a sign's radius line is left blank or invalid, so it prevents accidental giant areas. You can also set the default message format here so new areas look consistent without each builder editing every sign.

Permissions and Practical Use

Decide who is allowed to place area signs. The mod itself does not add a permission system, so use your server's protection plugin to restrict sign placement to trusted builders — otherwise any player can rename your town by editing a sign. Common uses on servers: spawn zones that greet new players, PvP border warnings, shop districts, and kingdom claims. Test with a second account or a friend before announcing the feature, since a misconfigured radius on a busy server will spam everyone's screen.
