How to Create Your First Area with a Sign

Placing the Sign

Craft a sign (any wood type works) and place it on a block where you want the center of your area to be. Right-click the sign to open its edit screen. Type the area name on the first line — this is the label players will see in notifications. On the second line, enter the radius you want. The radius is measured in blocks from the sign, so a radius of 50 creates a circle 100 blocks across. Confirm the entry and the area is immediately active.

Testing the Area

Walk out past the radius and back in. A notification should appear at the top of your screen announcing the area name. If nothing shows, check that you typed the radius as a plain number with no extra characters, and that the sign is still placed. You can edit the sign at any time by right-clicking it again — changes apply instantly without needing to break and replace it.

Tips for Placement

Put the sign somewhere out of the way, like inside a wall or under a floor block, so it does not clutter your build. The sign itself does not need to be visible for the area to work. If you want a rectangular region instead of a circle, you cannot do it with one sign — instead, overlap several circular areas until the combined shape covers the space you want.
