Find and Locate Wild Hippos

Where Hippos Spawn

Hippos spawn naturally in savanna biomes only. They typically appear in groups, so finding one hippo usually means more are nearby. Search near water sources—hippos are drawn to rivers, lakes, and shallow ponds where they can cool off during the day.

Locating a Herd

1. Travel to a savanna biome using a map or by exploring

2. Look for bodies of water—hippos congregate around these areas

3. Listen for splashing and movement sounds

4. Scan the grassland during daytime when hippos are most visible near water

5. Check at night when hippos leave water to graze on grass

What to Look For

Male hippos are larger and rarer than females, so if you spot a particularly large purple hippo, you've found a valuable specimen. Groups vary in size depending on your mod configuration, but you'll rarely find hippos alone.

If you're having trouble locating them naturally, you can use a Hippopotamus Spawn Egg from the creative inventory to place hippos manually in your world.
