Where to Find Smithing Templates and Trim Materials

Templates

Armor trim smithing templates are found in loot chests across various structures in the world. Different templates come from different locations — for example, some are found in ocean monuments, others in bastions, strongholds, desert temples, or ancient cities. Each template has a distinct pattern name. You can also duplicate most templates using a crafting recipe that combines the template with the appropriate materials, so once you find one you can make more.

Trim Materials

Trim materials are the items you combine with the template to set the trim's color. These include common metals and minerals such as iron, gold, copper, diamond, netherite, redstone, lapis, emerald, amethyst, and quartz. Each produces a different color on the trim. You do not need a full block or ingot in every case — check what the smithing table accepts for the material you want.

Practical Tips

If you only want the look and not the cost, you can use cheaper materials like copper or quartz for a subtle trim. For a flashy look, netherite or gold stands out. Since animal armor trims use the same templates and materials as player armor, any stockpile you already have for player trimming will work here too.
