Adaptive Performance Tweaks FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Do I need to install this mod on the client too, or is it server-side only?
Adaptive Performance Tweaks is a server-side mod, so clients don't need it installed to join. You can run it on a dedicated server or in singleplayer, and vanilla or lightly-modded clients will still connect fine.
How do I get started with Adaptive Performance Tweaks after installing it?
Make sure the Core module is present, since every other module depends on it. Then open the config files for the modules you want (Game Rules, Items, Player, Spawn) and enable only the tweaks that match your modpack's needs.
What does the Core module actually do?
Core is the required foundation that the other modules hook into, and it handles the shared logic for monitoring and applying tweaks. Without it, the Game Rules, Items, Player, and Spawn modules won't function.
How does the mod decide when to change settings?
It watches server performance in real time, mainly TPS, and adjusts the settings you've allowed it to touch when performance drops below your configured thresholds. When things recover, it can relax those tweaks again.
What kinds of things can the Game Rules module change?
It can toggle or adjust vanilla game rules that affect server load, such as mob-related and random-tick-style behaviors, based on your config. You choose which rules it's allowed to touch, so nothing changes unless you opt in.
What does the Items module do to help performance?
It manages item-related load, typically by limiting or clearing excessive dropped items and similar entity buildup that hurts TPS. The exact behavior is controlled through its config so you can decide how aggressive it is.
How does the Player module affect gameplay for my players?
It applies per-player or player-count-based tweaks, such as scaling certain simulation behaviors when many players are online. This helps keep TPS stable during peak hours without punishing small sessions.
What is the Spawn module for?
It targets spawn-related load, like mob spawning and spawn-chunk activity, which is often a major TPS drain on busy servers. You can tune how much it throttles spawning when performance dips.
Will this mod conflict with other performance mods like Lithium, Starlight, or similar?
Because it avoids deep code injections like Mixins, it's generally highly compatible with other mods. Still, if you run another mod that also changes the same game rules or spawning behavior, check for overlapping effects and disable one side.
I enabled everything and my TPS didn't improve, or gameplay feels weird. What went wrong?
Enabling every tweak at once is a common mistake; it can cause odd behavior without fixing the real bottleneck. Enable modules one at a time, use Debug Mode to see which tweaks are firing, and check whether your actual bottleneck is something else like chunk loading or entity counts.
