Test that Unbreaking really gives infinite durability

If you want proof that the enchantment works, a quick test in a safe world will show it. The effect is that gear with Unbreaking does not lose durability at all, rather than losing it more slowly.

Set up the test

1. Create a creative world, or use a survival world with cheats on.

2. Make two matching items, such as two iron pickaxes or two sets of armor. Put Unbreaking on only one.

3. Press F3 + H to turn on advanced tooltips. Hovering over an item then shows its exact durability.

Tool test

  • Mine a lot of stone with the plain pickaxe and then with the enchanted one.
  • The plain one's durability bar shrinks. The enchanted one should stay exactly where it was.

Armor test

1. Wear the enchanted armor.

2. Light TNT next to you, or stand near a safe damage source. Keep health high or use creative-style protection so you survive.

3. Check the armor afterward. The enchanted pieces should keep the same durability as before.

Notes

  • Test with a damaged item to make the result obvious, since a full bar hides small changes.
  • You will still take damage. Unbreaking only protects the item's durability, not you.
