How to plan block counts for a large staircase

Because each block becomes one stair, the maths for big builds is simple. Use it to work out how much to gather before you start.

Work out your needs

1. Count the stairs in your design, including steps, roofing and trim.

2. Round up to the next multiple of 6, because each craft makes 6 stairs from 6 blocks.

3. That number is the blocks you need to gather. Blocks needed equals stairs needed.

For example, 24 stairs takes 4 crafts, which is 24 blocks. At the vanilla rate of 4 stairs per 6 blocks, the same 24 stairs would take 6 crafts, or 36 blocks.

Saving effort

  • Mining or smelting is usually the slow part, so you save the most with materials that take effort, such as smelted stone or cobblestone variants.
  • Craft in full batches of 6 blocks and shift-click the output, so you don't have to count crafts one by one.
  • Keep a few spare blocks for full-block edges where the staircase meets walls or landings.
  • Plan for one block per stair when mixing stairs and slabs in a roof. Slab recipes are not part of this pack's stair change.
