How to Locate and Use Ancient Pillars and Desert Obelisks

Spotting Them From Afar

Ancient Pillars and Desert Obelisks are tall, vertical landmarks that rise above the surrounding terrain. That height is the point: they are meant to be visible from a long distance so you can navigate by them. When you spot one on the horizon, note its direction before you move — it doubles as a waypoint. Both generate in desert-type biomes, so if you are crossing a large desert, keep your render distance up and scan for silhouettes against the sky.

Reaching and Exploring Them

Pillars and obelisks are usually solid structures rather than hollow dungeons, so the reward is often the structure itself plus whatever generates at its base. Walk a full circle around the base before climbing — decorative blocks, small loot spots, or buried details can sit on the shaded side. If the structure is tall, pillar up with cheap blocks or use a water bucket to descend safely instead of jumping.

Using Them as Navigation

  • Build a small marker (torch, campfire, or banner) at the base of each one you visit so you can tell which you have already checked.
  • Use two pillars as reference points to triangulate your position when exploring a featureless desert.
  • Obelisks make good bases of operations: flat ground, a landmark for friends, and a clear spot to park a bed and chests.
