How to Fix 'Packet Too Large' Kicks When Joining a Modded Server

Why You're Getting Kicked

When a server sends a packet larger than the vanilla limit, your client disconnects with a message about an oversized packet or a payload that exceeds the maximum size. This usually happens on servers with huge datapacks, many recipes, or mods that sync large amounts of data on join. XXL Packets raises that ceiling so the client accepts the packet instead of rejecting it.

Steps to Resolve

1. Confirm the mod is present on both the client and the server. If only one side has it, the connection will still fail.

2. Make sure the mod is actually loading. Check your mods list in-game or the log for the mod's name appearing during startup.

3. Restart the client completely after adding the mod — a hot reload won't apply the new packet limit.

4. Reconnect to the server. The oversized packet should now be accepted.

5. If you still get kicked, check the server log for the actual packet size being sent. If it exceeds even the raised limit, the issue is a different mod sending malformed or absurdly large data, not the vanilla limit.

If It Still Fails

Verify there isn't a second packet-limiting mod installed that overrides this one. Conflicting limit mods can cause unpredictable behavior. Remove duplicates and test again.
