WorldGuard Plugin FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get started with WorldGuard after installing it?
WorldGuard works alongside WorldEdit, so you'll typically use WorldEdit's selection commands (like the wand) to define an area first. Once you have a selection, use /rg claim to turn it into a protected region. From there, add owners and members with /rg addowner and /rg addmember.
What's the difference between a region owner and a region member?
Owners can modify the region itself — adding or removing members, changing flags, and deleting the region. Members can build and interact inside the region but can't change who else has access. Use /rg addowner and /rg addmember to assign each.
How do I stop people from breaking blocks in my region?
Regions block building by default for anyone who isn't an owner or member, so simply claiming the area is usually enough. If you want to allow building but deny something specific, use flags like build, block-break, or block-place with /rg flag.
How do I disable PvP in a specific area?
Select the region and run /rg flag pvp deny. This only affects that region, so you can keep PvP on elsewhere. To disable it server-wide instead, set the same flag on the __global__ region.
What is the __global__ region and how is it different from a normal region?
__global__ is a special region that applies to the entire world rather than a defined area. Flags set on it act as server-wide defaults, and individual regions can override them. Use it for things like disabling fire spread or mob damage everywhere.
How do I stop fire from spreading across my whole server?
Set the fire-spread flag to deny on the __global__ region with /rg flag -g __global__ fire-spread deny. You can also use the /stopfire command to immediately extinguish all active fires. For finer control, deny fire-spread only inside specific regions.
Why can't players build in my region even though I added them as a member?
Check that the region actually covers the area they're trying to build in — overlapping or misaligned regions are a common cause. Also confirm the build flag isn't explicitly set to deny, since that overrides membership. Use /rg info to see the current flags and members.
How do I let visitors do things like open doors or use buttons without letting them build?
Use interaction flags such as use, interact, or chest-access and set them to allow for the region. Building stays blocked unless you also allow the build flag. This lets you keep a region protected while still permitting specific interactions.
Does WorldGuard work with mods and other plugins?
WorldGuard works more or less with other Bukkit plugins and many FTB mods, but compatibility isn't guaranteed for every modded block or mechanic. Some mod blocks may not be protected by default flags, so test important interactions in your setup. If something isn't covered, you may need a plugin or flag that specifically handles it.
Will having lots of regions hurt my server's performance?
WorldGuard is generally lightweight, but a very large number of regions or complex flag setups can add overhead on busy servers. You can use /wg profile -p to CPU-profile the plugin and /wg report -p to dump statistics if you suspect it's causing lag. Keeping regions reasonably sized and avoiding excessive overlapping helps.
