Using Void Fog for Atmosphere in Builds and Adventure Maps

If you build underground dungeons, horror maps, or atmospheric bases, this mod is a free mood tool. The fog does the lighting work for you.

Designing Around the Fog

Plan rooms so players can't see the whole space at once. Long corridors and tall caverns read as far more ominous when the far end dissolves into grey. Put your payoff — a portal, a boss, a treasure — just beyond the fog's edge so it emerges as players approach. Because the fog intensifies with depth, a staircase descending into your dungeon naturally ramps up tension without any redstone or command blocks.

Contrast and Pacing

Break up the gloom with bright, fog-free areas higher up so the descent feels like a transition. A well-lit entrance hall followed by a foggy lower level gives players a clear sense of going somewhere dangerous. Use sound alongside it — the fog hides the source of noises, which multiplies the effect.

Testing Your Map

Walk your build at the intended depth and check sightlines from a player's eye level, not from spectator mode. If key landmarks vanish too early, raise them or add light. The goal is mystery, not frustration.
