Void Fog Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on void fog?
Void fog is active by default once the mod is installed, appearing automatically as you descend to low Y-levels. If you don't see it, check your mod config to confirm the effect is enabled and that your render distance isn't hiding it.
At what Y-level does void fog start showing up?
The fog thickens gradually as you go deeper, matching the classic behavior where it becomes noticeable well below sea level and intensifies near bedrock. It's a smooth gradient rather than a hard cutoff, so you'll see it creep in as you mine downward.
Why is my void fog so thick I can't see anything?
The fog density is configurable, so open the mod's config file and lower the density or set a minimum Y-level before it kicks in. Many players reduce it in caves they use regularly while keeping it strong for atmosphere elsewhere.
Can I disable void fog completely?
Yes, the mod includes a config option to turn the effect off entirely if you prefer full visibility. This is useful for redstone builds, mob farms, or mining where the fog gets in the way.
Does void fog work in the Nether or End?
The effect is tied to Y-level, so it can appear in any dimension where you go low enough, including the Nether's lower areas. The End's terrain usually sits above the threshold, so you may not notice it there unless you build downward.
Is void fog just a visual effect or does it do something?
It's purely atmospheric—it doesn't damage you, spawn mobs, or change gameplay mechanics. Its purpose is to restore the sense of mystery and depth that low Y-levels had in older Minecraft versions.
Can I use void fog in my adventure map?
Yes, it's a popular choice for horror maps, cave explorations, and underground builds because it hides distant terrain and builds tension. You can tune the density per your map's needs through the config.
Does void fog hurt my FPS?
The effect is lightweight since it's just a rendering overlay, so performance impact is minimal on most systems. If you're already struggling with framerate, lowering your render distance will help more than disabling the fog.
Will void fog conflict with shaders or other fog mods?
Shader packs often have their own fog handling, which can override or clash with the mod's effect. If the fog looks wrong or disappears with shaders on, check your shader's fog settings or disable one of the two.
Why did void fog stop working after I changed my settings?
Common causes are a config reset, a render distance set too low to show the fog, or another mod overriding fog rendering. Recheck the mod's config file and make sure nothing else is controlling fog in your load order.
