Understand How Shadows and Sun Rays Work Together
Shadow Mechanics
Shadows in Vivid Lucid Shadows are cast by the sun and major light sources. They appear softer and more realistic than vanilla shadows while remaining performance-friendly. Shadows are most visible on flat surfaces like grass and stone, and less pronounced on vertical surfaces depending on angle.
Sun Ray Effects
Sun rays (volumetric light) appear as visible beams of light, especially noticeable when the sun is partially obscured by clouds or terrain. These rays are most dramatic during sunrise and sunset. The effect is purely visual and doesn't affect gameplay mechanics.
How They Interact
Shadows and sun rays work together to create depth and atmosphere. Where sun rays pass through gaps in trees or clouds, shadows beneath become more defined. In heavily shaded areas, sun rays may still penetrate, creating contrast.
Environmental Factors
Weather affects both effects—rain and storms reduce sun ray visibility while shadows remain consistent. Water surfaces reflect both shadows and rays, enhancing realism. Caves and enclosed spaces show minimal sun effects, as intended.
Vanilla Compatibility
These effects enhance vanilla lighting without replacing it, preserving the familiar Minecraft aesthetic.
