What Legacy Players Can and Cannot Do on a ViaRewind Server
ViaRewind translates packets, but it cannot give an old client features its version never had. Knowing the boundaries prevents a lot of support tickets.
What works
Legacy clients can join, move around, chat, and interact with the world in the ways their version supports. Basic gameplay, block breaking and placing, and inventory use generally function because those mechanics existed in 1.7 and 1.8.
What breaks or looks wrong
Blocks and items added after the client's version will appear as substitutes or be invisible. New mobs may render incorrectly or not at all. Modern chat formatting, custom item models, and newer GUI elements often display as plain text or fail silently. These are translation limits, not configuration errors.
Set player expectations
Tell legacy players up front which features are unavailable so they do not report them as bugs. If your server relies heavily on modern-only content, consider whether supporting 1.7 and 1.8 is worth the trade-off. ViaRewind is best for servers where core gameplay matters more than cutting-edge visuals.
