Optimize Performance While Keeping VHS Effects
Identify Performance-Heavy Effects
VHS X BSL adds multiple visual layers: grain, scanlines, chromatic aberration, and tape distortion. If your frame rate drops significantly, these effects may be the cause, especially on lower-end systems.
Reduce Shader Intensity Gradually
Start by lowering Grain Intensity first—this is often the most demanding effect. Reduce it by 25% and test your frame rate. If performance improves but the look feels too clean, adjust scanline strength instead.
Chromatic aberration and tape distortion are typically less demanding than grain, so keep those enabled for maximum atmosphere while reducing grain.
Balance Quality and Playability
You don't need to disable the shader entirely. A medium-intensity VHS effect—reduced grain, moderate scanlines, and subtle chromatic aberration—still creates the retro horror mood while running smoothly.
Test in demanding areas like forests with many trees or caves with complex lighting. Adjust settings until you find the sweet spot where the game looks creepy and runs at your target frame rate.
