How to Set Per-Player Render Distance in VMP

What This Feature Does

Very Many Players adds packet-level per-player render distance. Instead of forcing one global view distance on everyone, the server decides how much to send each player based on their own client render distance setting. This reduces wasted bandwidth for players who keep their render distance low.

Enabling It

Open the VMP config file in your server's config folder. Locate the option related to per-player render distance (it may be labeled as packet-level or dynamic render distance) and set it to enabled. Save the file and restart the server.

How It Behaves In-Game

Players who lower their render distance in video settings will receive fewer chunks and entity updates from the server. Players with high render distance still get their full view. This is handled at the packet level, so it works even for vanilla clients.

Tips

  • Pair this with entity tracker caching for the best results in crowded areas.
  • If players report missing entities at the edge of their view, check that the feature is not conflicting with another view-distance mod.
  • Test with a few players at different render distances to confirm behavior before rolling out server-wide.
