How to Reduce Lag With Many Players Using VMP

Why VMP Helps

Vanilla Minecraft sends player and entity information individually, which scales poorly. Very Many Players segments the world into areas and optimizes nearby packet sending and player lookups, so the server does less redundant work as player count grows.

Steps to Maximize Gains

1. Install VMP on the server only. It is a server-side mod, so vanilla clients can still connect.

2. Enable entity tracker caching in the config so trackers are reused instead of rebuilt per player.

3. Turn on packet-level per-player render distance so distant players receive fewer updates.

4. If your server uses RakNet-based networking, VMP's raknetify integration prioritizes packets for more responsive connections.

What to Expect

You should see smoother tick times and lower bandwidth usage in crowded areas like spawn or hubs. Note that VMP does not remove vanilla mechanics, so farms and redstone behave normally.

Combining With Other Mods

VMP overlaps with some general performance mods. Avoid stacking multiple mods that all rewrite entity tracking, as they can conflict. Test one change at a time and monitor your server's performance metrics.
