How to Configure Very Many Players Mod for Your Server

Finding the Config File

After installing Very Many Players (VMP), a config file is generated in your server's config folder, typically named after the mod. Open it with any text editor. Most settings are server-side, so clients do not need matching configs to connect.

Key Settings to Tune

  • Entity tracker caching: VMP caches entity trackers so nearby players share tracking data instead of each player running separate lookups. Keep this enabled for the biggest gains on crowded servers.
  • Packet-level per-player render distance: This lets the server send chunks and entities to each player based on their own view distance rather than a global value. Enable it if players use different render distances.
  • Area segmentation: VMP splits the world into regions and optimizes packet sending per region. Leave the default region sizing unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Applying Changes

Save the file and restart the server (a reload may not pick up all changes). Watch your server's tick time and network usage before and after. If you run other optimization mods, check for overlapping features so you are not double-optimizing the same systems.

Testing

Join with several accounts or ask players to stress-test during peak hours. Compare entity tracking behavior and chunk loading responsiveness.
