How to Troubleshoot Vault Patcher Not Changing Any Text

First Checks

If nothing changes after installing Vault Patcher, the problem is usually that no patch is being applied rather than the mod being broken. Vault Patcher is a library — on its own it does nothing visible. It needs patch data and a target mod that contains matching hardcoded strings.

Diagnosing the Cause

1. Verify the mod you want localized is actually present and loading. Vault Patcher cannot affect a mod that is not installed.

2. Check that patch files exist and are in the location Vault Patcher expects. An empty or misplaced patch folder produces zero changes.

3. Confirm the target string still matches. After a mod update, literals often shift slightly, which breaks the match.

4. Make sure your language file contains the keys the patches reference. Missing keys show as raw identifiers.

5. Check the game log for patch loading messages or errors. Failed patches are frequently reported there with the string that did not match.

When It Still Fails

Some text cannot be patched because it is assembled dynamically at runtime, pulled from a server, or stored in a data file rather than compiled code. In those cases no patch will work, and the mod itself would need to add proper localization support. Also confirm your game language is set to the locale you added translations for — if you only added one language and the game is set to another, nothing will appear to change.
