How to Make Your Torches and Lanterns Light Up the Area While You Walk

What Actually Happens

Dynamic Lights makes light-emitting items in your hand or offhand cast real light around you as you move. This is automatic — there is no keybind to toggle for basic handheld lighting. The light follows your position and updates as you walk, so caves, mineshafts, and night-time travel become much safer without placing a single torch.

Steps to Get It Working

1. Craft or grab a torch, lantern, soul lantern, glowstone, or any other light-emitting item.

2. Hold it in your main hand or offhand. Offhand works well because you keep your tool in the main hand.

3. Walk around and watch the ground — you should see a moving pool of light. If you do not, check that the mod is actually loaded and that no other dynamic-lighting mod is conflicting.

4. For brighter travel, use a higher-tier light source. A torch gives a modest radius; a lantern or glowstone gives a noticeably larger one.

5. Drop the item and the light disappears instantly — useful for stealth or for not lighting up a base you are sneaking past.

Tips

  • Enchanted gear and amethyst-trimmed armor also glow, so you can light your way while fully armed.
  • If you play with shaders, dynamic light may render differently; test in a dark room first.
