How to Control Light Levels and Stop Dynamic Lights From Being Too Bright

Understanding Light Tiers

Dynamic Lights assigns light levels to items based on their type. Different items emit different intensities — a torch is dimmer than glowstone, and enchanted gear glows softly. The mod uses a small set of light levels rather than a continuous range, so brightness is grouped into tiers.

Managing Brightness

1. Choose the right item for the job. For subtle ambient glow while building, hold enchanted gear or a low-tier item. For bright caving, use glowstone, lava buckets, or sea lanterns.

2. Switch hands. If your main-hand item is too bright, move it to the offhand or swap to a non-light item to drop the light entirely.

3. Drop the item to kill the light. This is the fastest way to go dark without changing your hotbar.

4. Check water behaviour. Some items react to water by changing their emission. If a source looks wrong underwater, try a different one.

Configuration and Conflicts

  • If the mod has an in-game config (via its config file or a mod menu), you can often adjust which items emit light and at what tier. Look for options listing item light values.
  • If light feels too strong or too weak, first confirm no other dynamic-lighting mod is also running — two mods fighting over the same effect causes flicker or doubled brightness.
  • Test changes in a dark room so you can clearly see the difference between tiers.
