How to Count Ores in an Area with /tk oredist

Running the ore count

Stand near the area you want to survey and run /tk oredist <dimension> <int>. The dimension argument is the dimension you want counted, and the integer sets how many 16x16 chunks around you are scanned. The command then counts the ores in that region and reports the results.

Pick the integer based on how wide a survey you need. A small value scans just the chunks immediately around you, which is fast and good for checking a single mining site. A larger value covers more ground but takes longer and returns a bigger tally.

Reading the results

The output breaks the count down by ore type, so you can see which ores are common or rare in the scanned area. Use it to:

  • Compare two mining spots before committing to one.
  • Check whether a modded ore is actually generating in your world.
  • Estimate how much material a quarry or tunnel will yield.

Things to keep in mind

  • The dimension argument matters. Counting the Overworld while you stand in the Nether gives you Overworld numbers, not local ones.
  • The scan is centered on your position, so move to the middle of the region you care about before running it.
  • Larger scans include more chunks and therefore more ores, so compare runs only when you use the same integer.
