Preparing for the Ascent

Before attempting either peak, familiarize yourself with the map's terrain. Maroon Peak and Pyramid Peak are the most prominent summits visible from Crater Lake. Both mountains feature steep, jagged ridgelines and significant elevation gain. Plan your route carefully—the terrain is unforgiving with sharp rock formations and exposed slopes.

Choosing Your Route

From Crater Lake, you can approach either peak by scrambling up the rocky slopes. The red and grey rock faces are steep and require careful footing. Look for natural breaks in the ridgeline and avoid loose scree that might cause slides. The jagged peaks demand patience and deliberate movement.

Reaching the Summit

As you climb higher, the terrain becomes more technical. Use the natural rock formations as handholds and footholds. The summit views reward your effort—you'll see across the entire Maroon Bells Wilderness, with deep valleys stretching out below and neighboring peaks at eye level. Take breaks to enjoy the alpine environment and the scale of the landscape around you.
