2. Store additional totems in your inventory—aim for 2-4 depending on your trip length

3. Keep your hotbar organized so you can quickly swap totems if needed

4. Consider using a shulker box to carry even more totems for extended adventures

When to Use Backups

After your active totem is consumed by saving you from death, immediately switch to a backup from your inventory. This prevents a second fatal hit from ending your run. Each totem provides one life-saving activation, so multiple totems equal multiple chances.
