How Shields Work Now

Tactical Shield Overhaul changes the way shields protect you. In vanilla Minecraft, raising a shield blocks all incoming damage from the front. With this mod, a shield instead reduces damage by a percentage, so you still take a portion of every hit even while actively blocking.

Because of this, shields are no longer a perfect defense. You can't simply hold right-click and ignore danger — you'll need to manage your health and positioning more carefully in combat.

Passive Protection

The mod also adds a passive benefit: simply holding a shield in your offhand grants protection, even when you aren't actively blocking. This means you get some damage reduction just by carrying a shield, without needing to raise it.

Different shields offer different values, so the amount of damage reduced — both while blocking and passively — depends on which shield you use. Experiment with the shields available to you to find the balance of protection that suits your playstyle.
