Fixing a Config That Resets or Won't Save

Check for file errors first

The most common cause of a config that reverts is a malformed file. Open the config .json in the config folder and look for missing commas, stray trailing commas, or unclosed brackets and quotes. A single syntax error makes the library discard your edits and regenerate defaults, which looks exactly like "it won't save."

Confirm you are editing the right file

If you play on a server, your local edits to server-side values are ignored because the server pushes its own values on join. Make sure you are editing the file in the correct location — the server's config folder for server-side settings, your instance's folder for client-side ones. Editing the wrong copy is a frequent source of confusion.

Reload instead of assuming

After a valid edit, trigger a reload rather than assuming it applied. Use the mod's config screen or reload command if available, otherwise leave and re-enter the world. If values still revert, delete the config file entirely and let the game write a fresh one, then reapply your changes one at a time so you can spot the entry that breaks it.
