Map Ocean Floor Terrain Without Diving
Read underwater topography from above water
The mod's primary strength is revealing ocean floor shape through water color alone. Lighter water indicates shallow sand and seagrass; darker water shows deep trenches, ravines, and drop-offs. You can map entire ocean regions without entering the water.
Steps:
1. Travel across an ocean in a boat or from high ground
2. Observe color patterns: gradual color shifts show gentle slopes; sharp color boundaries reveal cliffs
3. Note where the darkest water appears—these are the deepest points
4. Sketch or remember the color gradient pattern to plan underwater exploration routes
5. Use the color map to locate interesting features like underwater mountains, trenches, or cave entrances
Combine with biome knowledge
Different ocean biomes have different base colors, but the depth darkening effect works consistently across all of them. Warm ocean biomes will show warm-toned shallow water and deep teal at depth, while cold oceans display cool blues throughout. This makes it easy to spot terrain features while maintaining the visual identity of each biome.
