Reduce Server Lag from Item Frames and Maps

Understand the Problem

Item frames containing maps can cause significant server lag because they update constantly and consume rendering resources. Spigot provides tools to minimize this impact without removing the feature entirely.

Disable Map Frame Updates

In your spigot.yml, find the world-settings section and look for map-item-frame-cursors or similar map-related options. Disabling cursor updates on maps in item frames prevents constant recalculation.

Limit Item Frame Rendering

If available, reduce the item-frame-update-interval value—this controls how often frames send updates to clients. Higher numbers mean less frequent updates and lower server load.

Monitor Impact

After making changes, restart your server and check TPS using /tps. If you have many item frames with maps, you should see noticeable improvement. Test with players online to ensure the visual experience remains acceptable.

Alternative: Strategic Placement

Consider asking players to avoid placing maps in item frames in high-traffic areas. Concentrate decorative frames in low-population zones where lag impact matters less.
