How to Understand Spell Targeting Modes and Impact Actions
Targeting Modes
Every spell in Spell Engine is defined with a targeting mode that decides where it lands:
- Projectile: fires a travelling shot that hits what it collides with.
- Beam: a continuous line from you toward your aim.
- Area: affects a region, often centered on you or on the impact point.
- Cursor: lands at the block or entity your crosshair points at.
Knowing the mode tells you how to aim. Projectiles and beams need a clear line; area spells reward positioning in a crowd; cursor spells are precise but need a valid target under your crosshair.
Impact Actions
When a spell connects, its impact actions decide what happens. Common actions include Damage, Heal, and applying a StatusEffect (buff or debuff). A single spell can combine several, so one cast might damage enemies and apply a debuff at once.
Reading a Spell Before You Use It
Check the item tooltip and any spell description from the content mod. It will indicate the targeting mode and what the impact does. Match the spell to the situation: use area or beam spells against groups, cursor or projectile spells for single targets, and heal/status spells when you need utility rather than raw damage.
