Spell Engine Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I actually get spells in Spell Engine?
Spell Engine is a library, so it doesn't add spells on its own — you need a content mod or datapack that defines them. Once one is installed, spells are usually bound to weapons or items, and you cast them by using that item.
Why does my weapon do nothing when I right-click?
The weapon probably has no spell assigned to it, or the spell is on cooldown or lacks its cost (runes, hunger, durability). Check that the item is actually spell-bound and that you meet the spell's cost requirements.
What's the difference between charged and channeled casting?
Charged spells build up while you hold the use button and fire when you release it. Channeled spells keep casting continuously while you hold, often draining cost over time.
How does Spell Power affect my damage?
Spell Power is an entity attribute that scales the damage and healing of spells you cast. Increasing it through gear, effects, or attributes makes your spells hit harder without changing the spell itself.
What are the different targeting modes?
Targeting modes decide where a spell goes: Area hits around a point, Beam fires in a line, Cursor follows your aim, and Projectile launches a moving entity. The mode is defined by the spell, not chosen by you at cast time.
What are impact actions and why do they matter?
Impact actions are what happens when a spell lands — damage, healing, or applying a status effect. A spell can combine several, so the same projectile might damage and apply a debuff on hit.
Why is my spell on cooldown all the time?
Cooldown is a cost defined per spell, and some spells have long ones by design. If it feels excessive, the spell's datapack config sets that value — you can't shorten it from the vanilla UI.
Can I add my own spells without coding?
Yes — spells are defined in JSON, so you can write datapack files that specify targeting, impact actions, costs, and visuals. No Java is required, but you do need to follow the spell schema correctly.
Does Spell Engine work with other magic or combat mods?
It's designed as a library other mods build on, so compatibility depends on whether those mods use its API. Mods that don't integrate with it generally won't share spell power or spell data.
Will lots of spells and particles hurt my performance?
Heavy particle and sound effects from many simultaneous casts can cost FPS, especially with beam or area spells. Reducing particle settings or avoiding mass spell spam helps more than anything else.
