Optimize shader performance for smoother gameplay
Check current performance
Launch your world and observe frame rate using the debug screen (F3). Note your baseline FPS, then open shader settings (Right Shift) to identify performance bottlenecks.
Disable or reduce intensive features
Reflections, shadow quality, and ambient occlusion are common performance consumers. Start by toggling off water reflections or reducing their quality. If frame rate improves significantly, you've found a culprit.
Lower shader quality presets
Many shader menus offer preset options like "Low," "Medium," or "High." Switching to a lower preset reduces overall visual complexity while keeping the shader's core aesthetic.
Adjust render distance and effects radius
Some settings control how far from the player shader effects are calculated. Reducing this radius can improve performance without removing features entirely.
Monitor changes in different environments
Test performance in caves, on the surface, and in World Evils biomes. Different areas stress the shader differently. Once you find settings that maintain smooth gameplay everywhere, you're optimized.
Balance visuals and performance
The goal is finding the highest quality you can maintain at your target frame rate.
