Tuning the Shadowyness Setting So Paths Look Right to You

What the setting controls

The mod exposes a "Shadowyness" value that scales how dark and how far the shading spreads across a block face. Low values give a faint rim, close to what you would see on a vanilla path in bright noon light. High values push the shadow further across the surface and make the block read as more recessed. There is no single correct value — it depends on your resource pack, your shader setup, and how much contrast you like.

Finding your value

1. Build a short test strip: a few dirt path blocks running between full blocks, plus one path block sitting alone on flat ground. The isolated one shows you the effect without neighbours influencing how it reads.

2. Open the config and change Shadowyness one step at a time. Do not jump to the extremes first — the useful range is usually in the middle and the ends look artificial.

3. Check the strip at noon and again at dusk. Shadow strength that looks subtle in full sun can look like a black smear in low light.

4. If you use shaders, re-check after enabling them. Shader packs apply their own ambient occlusion, and the two effects stack.

5. Once you are happy, note the value down. Config resets or a fresh instance will lose it.

If the effect looks blocky or stair-stepped rather than smooth, you have pushed the value too high for your resolution.
