Using Resource Packs to Replace Sodium's Shaders

Replacing Sodium's Shaders with a Resource Pack

Sodium Core Shader Support lets a resource pack override the shaders Sodium uses internally, the same way vanilla resource packs can override core shaders. This means block, cloud, and terrain rendering can be visually changed while Sodium stays installed.

To use it, apply a resource pack that was built for this mod. The pack supplies replacement shader files in Sodium's own folder layout:

  • assets/sodium/shaders/blocks/ for files such as block_layer_opaque.fsh and .vsh
  • assets/sodium/shaders/clouds/ for clouds.fsh and .vsh

Packs can also use terrain defines like RENDER_PASS_SOLID, RENDER_PASS_CUTOUT, and RENDER_PASS_TRANSLUCENT to target specific terrain types.

One important limitation: ordinary vanilla shader packs will not work. Only packs written specifically for Sodium Core Shader Support are compatible, so check that a pack states this before expecting effects such as night vision, energy glows, or custom lighting to appear.
