Decide Between Smelting Touch and Silk Touch
Key Differences
Smelting Touch and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive — you can only have one per tool. Your choice depends on your current goal:
Use Smelting Touch when:
- You want ingots and bricks directly without furnace time
- You're gathering resources for immediate use or storage
- You're mining ores in bulk and want efficiency
- You don't need the original ore blocks
Use Silk Touch when:
- You need to preserve ore blocks for later smelting
- You're collecting blocks like ice, glass, or obsidian that don't smelt
- You want to move ore deposits to a different location
- You're gathering blocks for decoration or building
Strategic Approach
Consider maintaining two pickaxes: one with Smelting Touch for active mining and resource gathering, and one with Silk Touch for collecting blocks you want to preserve or move. This gives you flexibility without needing to constantly swap enchantments.
Since both enchantments have the same rarity, you can realistically obtain both over time.
