How to Build a 2×2 Nether Portal and Avoid Corner Obsidian

Frame Shape

A 2×2 portal has a 2-wide, 2-tall interior. Build it like a standard portal but smaller:

1. Place a row of three obsidian blocks on the ground.

2. Stack two obsidian on each end, giving you two columns three tall.

3. Cap the top with a row of three obsidian.

The interior is 2×2. Light the inside with flint and steel.

Skipping Corners

You can omit the four corner obsidian blocks entirely. The frame becomes a plus/cross shape: top-center, bottom-center, left-middle, right-middle, plus the interior edges. The mod still recognizes it as valid. This is handy when obsidian is scarce or when you are building a portal in a tight space like a Nether tunnel.

What Happens on Arrival

The mod handles the vanilla teleport quirk where small portals drop you underneath the destination portal. It scans the blocks below the arrival spot. If they are netherrack, soul sand, or air, it converts them to obsidian and creates an air gap so you land safely in front of the portal. You will not suffocate or fall into lava because of the portal itself. Always scout the area around a new portal before exploring, since the mod only fixes the immediate arrival zone.
